Blackspotted snake eel
The Blackspotted snake eel〔(Common names for ''Quassiremus ascensionis'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Quassiremus ascensionis'') is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).〔(''Quassiremus ascensionis'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by Théophile Rudolf Studer in 1889.〔Studer, T., 1889 (18853 ) ''Die Forschungsreise SMS "Gazelle" in den Jahren 1874 bis 1876 unter Kommando des Kapitän zur See Freiherrn von Schleinitz ...III.'' Theil: Zoologie und Geologie. Berlin. i-vi + 1-322, Pls. 1-33.〕 It is a rare tropical, marine eel which is known from the western and southern Atlantic Ocean, including Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Lesser Antilles, Brazil, and Ascension Island (from which its species epithet is derived). It is known to dwell at a depth of 12 metres, and inhabits sand and turtle grass; it forms burrows which leave its head exposed. Males can reach a maximum total length of 71 centimetres.〔
